MRnet Capabilities

The Manitoba Research Network (MRnet) is Manitoba's optical research
advanced network that connects Manitoba's research and education
institutions to one another, and to partners and colleagues throughout
Canada and around the world.

Advanced research and education networks are high-performance networks that
interconnect the world's universities and other research and education
institutions.

Advanced networks are designed to support experimental and
collaborative efforts in education and research in all disciplines and are a
critical part of most research activities.

They also act as a testing ground for new network technologies and
applications and can include the following:

• greater bandwidth high-speed networks
• support for a variety of data formats
• high-performance computing
• grid computing
• specialized data storage systems
• scientific visualization tools
• advanced collaboration technologies such as video conferencing
• computers that store and provide multimedia teaching tools

In Canada, each of the 10 provinces has an optical regional advanced
network. Each of these networks connect to the Canadian national advanced
network, operated by CANARIE, which then connects to the worldwide research
network. The global system of education and research networks involves 42
nations around the world. All European and Pacific Rim countries have
advanced research networks.
